Zello is one of the hottest apps right now thanks to its ability to aid rescue efforts during natural disasters.
- The app allows users to touch a button to talk to anyone on cellular connection using Wi-Fi.
- The free app is available for both iOS and Android devices.
- Zello requires you to create an account, followed by the ability to explore a number of channels to join and chat.
- Some of these channels are designed to aid rescue efforts.
- The app's technology has been around since 2007 and it has been used to aid a number of global uprisings, including ones in Egypt and the Ukraine. Protests in Venezuela were also aided thanks to the app.
- Last week, Zello CEO Bill Moore said that 20 times as many new users in Houston were using the app compared to the previous week due to Hurricane Harvey's impact on the region.
- The app moved to the top of Apple's app store on Tuesday, as well as the top of the Google Play store on Wednesday.
"It's centered on live voice," said Zello CEO Bill Moore. "Our voice is how we most naturally communicate. A few seconds of voice has so much information on emotion, education, gender, what part of the country are they from."
