OpenAI’s Sora Text-to-Video Generator Makes a Splash with Public Launch

Sam Altman-led OpenAI’s text-to-video generator tool, Sora, made a big bang with its public launch yesterday. The company’s most awaited offering was met with great enthusiasm and high demand, forcing OpenAI to temporarily halt new account registrations for the service. Sora offers advanced text-to-video generation capabilities and was launched for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users yesterday.

Sora Offers Text-to-Video Creation with Usage Limits

Sora can generate 20-second clips from users’ text inputs, with a 1080p resolution and options for custom aspect ratios. Users can also adjust the videos with text, images, and storyboards. ChatGPT Plus subscribers can use Sora without any further fees, though they are limited to a certain number of video generations per month. Moreover, credits are needed for video creation, and the number of credits required varies depending on the resolution and length of the video.

However, Sora is not yet available for European users. The website lists a number of countries where the tool can be used, with the possibility of account suspension or a ban in other countries. In the coming months, OpenAI hopes to improve accessibility and affordability for Sora, while also addressing concerns around misuse and developing verification tools for Sora-generated content.

After being tested by select artists and creators over the past few months, Sora was publicly launched on OpenAI’s Sora.com. Sora Turbo, the updated version of the tool, can process requests even faster with improved text-to-video generation capabilities. The website also allows users to showcase their creations on a community feed, enhancing larger user adoption from all genres of innovators. The launch follows a viral online leak of Sora by artists last month, who protested that the company was using them as unpaid R&D, free bug testers, PR puppets, and validation tokens.
