Live cattle futures are up another 40 to 60 cents in the front months on Friday. Cash trade is picking up with sales of $200 being reported in the South and live sales of $202-205 in the North and $320 in the beef. Feeder cattle futures are seeing front month strength, with hep from the cash market. Jan is up $2.45, with other nearbys down a dime. The CME Feeder Cattle Index was up another $2.14 from the day prior at $275.00 on January 8.
Beef export sales totaled 5,599 MT in the week of January 2 to kick off the new year. Shipments totaled 10,980 MT in that week. Japan was the primary destination of 3,300 MT, with 2,800 MT to South Korea.
USDA wholesale Boxed Beef prices were higher in the Friday AM report, with the Chc/Sel spread narrowing to $19.55. Choice boxes were up $2.34 at $333.12/cwt, with Select $5.22 higher @ $313.57. USDA estimated federally inspected cattle slaughter for Thursday at 122,000 head, taking the weekly total to 479,000 head. That is up 55,629 head from the same week last year.
