AbbVie Joins Federal 340B Rebate Pilot Program Ahead Of 2027 Launch

(RTTNews) - AbbVie (ABBV) on October 2, Friday announced that it has been approved to participate in the federal 340B Rebate Model Pilot Program, a government initiative aimed at improving pricing transparency and oversight within the long-running 340B drug discount program. The pilot is scheduled to begin on January 1, 2027.

The 340B program allows eligible hospitals, clinics and other healthcare providers serving vulnerable populations to purchase certain medicines at discounted prices. The rebate model pilot is designed to introduce a new process for obtaining these discounts while improving accountability and reducing administrative challenges.

Under the pilot, participating healthcare organizations will submit claims through Beacon, a technology platform supporting implementation of the rebate model, to receive 340B pricing on eligible dispenses of three AbbVie medicines: IMBRUVICA, LINZESS and VRAYLAR.

According to the company, it will provide participating organizations with access to the Beacon, along with technical assistance, customer service and educational resources, at no cost. AbbVie also said it plans to offer individualized support and hardship accommodations to organizations that may face operational challenges during the transition.

The company stated that it views the rebate model pilot as a step forward in strengthening accountability within the 340B program. AbbVie said a rebate-based approach could help improve pricing transparency, reduce the risk of duplicate discounts and address complexity arising from Medicare-negotiated drug prices.

The pilot will be overseen by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Office of Pharmacy Affairs. As implementation moves forward, AbbVie said it intends to work with HRSA, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, covered entities and other stakeholders to support the rollout and evaluate the model's effectiveness.

IMBRUVICA is approved for blood cancer indications, LINZESS is used for certain gastrointestinal disorders, and VRAYLAR is approved for several psychiatric conditions. The three products will be included in the initial phase of AbbVie's participation in the pilot program.

The announcement reflects the company's participation in a broad federal effort to test whether a rebate-based framework can improve the administration and oversight of the 340B program while maintaining access to discounted medicines for eligible healthcare providers.

ABBV has traded between $190.75 and $269.39 over the past year. The stock closed Friday's trading (October 2, 2026) at $262.82, up 1.11%.
