Abbott Launches SimpleScreen CRC Blood Test For Colorectal Cancer Screening

(RTTNews) - Abbott (ABT) has launched SimpleScreen CRC in the U.S., an FDA-approved blood test for colorectal cancer screening in adults aged 45 and older who are at average risk.

Colorectal cancer is a major cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S., but screening can help detect the disease earlier. SimpleScreen CRC is designed to provide another screening option for people who decline or do not complete preferred stool-based or visual screening methods.

The test uses a simple blood draw to analyze circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) for signals associated with colorectal cancer. In a clinical study involving more than 48,000 adults, SimpleScreen CRC demonstrated 81.1% sensitivity for colorectal cancers and correctly identified 90.4% of people without colorectal cancer or advanced precancerous lesions.

SimpleScreen CRC is covered by Medicare, with no out-of-pocket costs for eligible patients with Medicare Part B. Medicare Advantage patients may have out-of-pocket costs.

Abbott said the test will be supported by patient navigation services, including blood-draw coordination, reminders, insurance assistance, and follow-up support. Patients with a positive result should receive a follow-up colonoscopy to complete the screening process.

The launch expands Abbott's colorectal cancer screening portfolio, which also includes the Cologuard Plus stool-based test.

ABT has traded between $81.97 and $135.45 over the past year. The stock is currently trading at $99.34, down 1.52%.
