Bouquet Casting Co. recently released a study ranking the states offering the best opportunities for photographers. The study looked at six factors: employment opportunities, average annual salaries, job postings per capita, photography-related online interest, revenue potential and scenic beauty.
Where is taking pictures for a living the most lucrative?
Hawaii
It’s no wonder why photographs of Hawaii sell worldwide. It’s a beautiful place that absolutely sparkles in pictures. That must be why the average annual salary for a photographer in Hawaii is $91.277. The revenue potential for photographers is said to be $155,112.
Vermont
Vermont brings to mind luscious forests and breathtaking landscapes, both of which contribute to its high ranking. Photographers in Vermont can expect to make an average salary of $98,656 a year — even higher than Hawaii. It also ranked #1 for scenic beauty ranking in the study.

New York
New York City is a place whose photos define America, and photographers can profit from that notion. The average annual salary is $64,755 with a revenue potential of $169,645. The state ranked #2 in scenic beauty ranking. It’s also worth noting that there were 692 photography-related searches per 100,000 people.
California
Swinging to the West Coast, the Golden State is one of the top places for photographers to find work. They can expect to make an average of $58,910 annually with a revenue potential of a whopping $237,747. That’s the highest revenue potential on the entire list.
North Dakota
Photographers will be delighted to find that the annual average salary for them in North Dakota is $138,026 — the highest in the country. That’s despite ranking low in scenic beauty at #46.
Maryland
The average annual salary for a photographer in Maryland is $60,669 with a revenue potential of $73,015. The state ranks pretty high for scenic beauty at #4. It also has 712 photography-related searches per 100,000 people.
Colorado
Proving the Rocky Mountains look great on camera, photographers can expect to make $61,729 on average every year with a revenue potential of $113,620. The state ranks #12 for scenic beauty.
Massachusetts
Photographers will make an average of $61,729 every year taking photos of The Bay State. There’s a revenue potential of $85,720 and 666 photography-related searches per 100,000 people.
Connecticut
Thinking of taking photos in Connecticut? Expect to make $57,636 annually on average. There’s a revenue potential of $73,458.
Washington
There’s so much to capture in Washington from the mountains to the water to volcanoes. Photographers will make $61,770 on average capturing the beautiful scenery every year with a revenue potential of $109,325.
