The two companies have been trying to collaborate in telematics since 2011. The duo aims at adding wings to connected car services by combining computer and wireless technology to provide information, entertainment and real time traffic updates to vehicles in motion.
Toyota has launched its data science hub for global operations in the form of a new company Toyota Connected, Inc. headquartered in Plano, TX.
Toyota Connected plans to use Microsoft's Azure platform to make driving more personal, perceptive and safer.
The Toyota Connected venture will come under the domain of chief information officer Zack Hicks and group vice president at Toyota Motor North America.
The company stated that the initial investment will be $5.5 million.
Hicks said, "We've all been talking about big data for a long time, but we are at a unique point in history where the technology is catching up with what we hope to achieve by delivering new services and capabilities into the vehicle."
The partnership is planning to roll out a new technology that will virtually assist drivers with road information, restaurant recommendations and preferred food. Medical sensors will track heartbeat and blood pressure. The system will also track actual miles travelled and routes covered, thereby making auto insurance pricing accurate.
After BMW, Toyota is the second car-maker to use Microsoft's Azure platform. Microsoft has recently offered its Azure platform to power BMW's Open Mobility Cloud.
