Ericsson 's ERIC endeavors toward developing robust 5G networks have earned accolades, with the company winning the "Biggest Contribution to 5G Development" award in this year's Informa Telecoms & Media's LTE Asia Award function. The "5G category" has debuted this year and Ericsson's contribution to 5G radio test beds fetched it the award.

Ercisson's 5G Test Beds

Rapid modernization of LTE networks, coupled with addition of higher frequencies and radio access technologies, will soon turn 5G vision into reality. Ericsson has committed itself toward designing test beds that can facilitate seamless interaction between mobile devices and radio access network, both internally and externally.

Ericsson's 5G radio test beds have become hugely popular among operators, eco-system partners, academia and analysts for demonstration of 5G features as well as live testing of key capabilities. A total of 11 operators, partnering with Ericsson's 5G radio test beds, have successfully implemented live test networks. This highlights a steady progress toward the commercial launch of 5G networks.

Operators all over the world are increasingly turning to Ericsson for integrating their LTE networks with the company's test beds, so as to enable easy adoption of 5G-based services and outshine peers. High throughput capacity and strong technical expertise of these test beds have added to their commercial appeal.

To Conclude

With the 5G systems expected to become commercially operational from 2020, key players like Verizon Communications Inc. VZ , AT&T Inc. T and Nokia NOK are all gearing up to secure the top spot.

Of late, device makers have been exerting pressure on telecom operators to improve their infrastructure, in order to help them serve clients in a better manner. As currently available networks have reached a saturation point, 5G seems the plausible solution for supporting new wireless applications like the Internet of Things (IoT).

In order to leverage this trend, Ericsson, in 2014, had invested $3.8 billion on research and development activities related to 4G, 5G and small cell technologies, to develop state-of-art test facilities.

We believe this Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) stock's concerted efforts, like strategic partnerships (with companies like Turkcell and LG Uplus), heavy investments and strong relationship with leading global LTE providers will help it become a frontrunner once 5G networks go full-fledged commercial.
